Could it be that the solution to terrifyingly accelerating air pollution problems in London actually lies in the past? That technology from the 19th century could and should be brought back into use, in order to make it easier and safer to breathe in the capital?

Back in the year 1897, a company by the name of the London Electrical Cab Co. became the first to launch a fleet of 80 vehicles for public use – all of which were 100% battery-powered. Here we are, 120 years later, and it seems that the future of taxis in London could very well live in the past.
The president of London Taxi Co. recently revealed that his company is to invest no less than $400 million in the manufacturing of electric taxis. The way they see it, the time has come to begin the slow but steady transition away from vehicles powered by diesel, in order to bring down the rather terrifying 10,000 early deaths each and every year attributed to smog.
The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has also been fighting to improve air pollution problems in the capital by campaigning for much tighter rules and restrictions on vehicle emissions. There have been several proposals to date with regard to encouraging owners of diesel vehicles and older vehicles in general to consider scrapping them, in order to benefit from ‘generous’ rebates against the prices of newer vehicles.
Unfortunately, pretty much every suggestion so far has been shot down in flames by the general public, having been accused of not realistically taking into account the fact that the vast majority of people may be entirely unable to upgrade, due to financial restrictions.
Nevertheless, everybody does at least seem to be in agreement that the kind of smog that smothered the capital in the 1950s represents exactly the kind of future nobody wants to see.
