Here at Take My Scrap Car, it’s mostly the subject of car scrapping and recycling that we’re interested in. Nevertheless, we are also very much aware of the interests of those we do business with, which is why we occasionally stray from the topic to talk about other matters. And in today’s instance, we’re looking at a fundamentally different type of scrapping that is likely to resonate with millions across the United Kingdom and beyond.

Chances are it will not have escaped your attention that the latest season of Top Gear wasn’t exactly the best to date. In fact, going by viewing figures, public response, critics’ reviews and the fact that the new host quit after one season, it was in every way, shape and form an unmitigated disaster. Chris Evans may have saved face to some extent by accepting it simply didn’t work, but most agreed it would have been better to leave the show dead and buried with its reputation intact.

But no – BBC bosses insisted on keeping it going and apparently have no intention whatsoever of reversing their decision anytime soon. In fact, in order to focus as much time and attention as possible on the second series, scheduled to premiere next year, they have made the decision to scrap the Christmas specials that have always been some of the most popular Top Gear episodes of all. Not only this, but the trio that made the show such a spectacular global success in the first place – Clarkson, May and Hammond – were set to appear in the Christmas specials, in order to give them a much needed boost.

Unfortunately – especially for the BBC – it looks like this isn’t going to happen. Instead, the second season of the new Top Gear format will debut in the spring of next year, when Matt LeBlanc will take over as the face of the show. Needless to say, this hasn’t exactly inspired a great deal of optimism or confidence in critics. Coupled with the fact that the three former presenters of Top Gear are themselves gearing up to launch their brand-new motoring show exclusive to Amazon, it’s looking like seriously troubled times ahead for Top Gear.

Which begs the question – is it time to scrap the show altogether? It may have once been the BBC’s single most valuable show on a global basis, but would it be the right thing to do to just let it go?

We’ll let you debate that one between yourselves!
