It’s no secret that the UK has a long way to go, before coming close to meeting its full collective recycling responsibilities. In fact, most people would probably admit that they could be doing way more to support the cause. But as far as the results of a new study are confirmed, younger Brits aged 18 to 34 are the worst offenders of all.

New data suggests that more than 25% of younger adults routinely throw items into recycling bins and boxes, despite not being certain as to whether or not they are recyclable. Likewise, recyclable waste is often thrown in with general waste, rather than being recycled.

While it’s not uncommon for the odd mistake to be made here and there, what’s concerning campaigners is the way in which young adults are apparently not making nearly enough effort to recycle responsibly.

“We all get things wrong from time to time – but a little bit of effort can go a long way,” Recycle for Wales said.

The group spoke this week following the announcement that Wales’ 64% recycling target had already been met, four years ahead of the project’s 2020 deadline. Nevertheless, the interviews carried out by the organisation found that the habits of younger people in particular left a lot to be desired. What’s more, several patterns were evident when collecting and compiling the data from those taking part in the study.

For example, among the 18 to 34-year-olds surveyed, 42% stated they are not confident that they are handling recycling correctly. In addition, 28% admitted they don’t know whether the items they put in recycling bins are recyclable, while almost 20% said they give little to no thought to what goes in the bin in general. In addition, one in five stated that they have no idea about local recycling guidelines and regulations.

Which would seem to suggest that more needs to be done – particularly when it comes to making recycling as easy and accessible as possible. Once again, the data collected during the surveys found that many young adults are not recycling responsibly because doing so is too difficult, time consuming or both. The easier recycling is made for the masses, the more likely it is that every age group will do the right thing.
