By far one of the most common conundrums motorists struggle with is that of how to transport a SORN car to its final resting place. There’s no shortage of scrapyard sand recycling facilities out there, but how to transport a vehicle that’s have been declared SORN?

Is there any allowance for driving a SORN car to a scrapyard, or could you find yourself in trouble for doing so?

SORN Explained

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification, which means that your car has been registered as permanently taken out of use. Once it has been declared SORN, it is no longer legal to drive it on public roads and any insurance you had on the vehicle is rendered invalid.

A car must be declared SORN if it is scrapped, if it is damaged beyond repair in an accident and sent off for recycling and so on.  Basically, all cars upon reaching the end of their practical lifespan must be declared SORN when they are taken out of use.

Driving SORN Vehicles to Scrap Yards

It may be one of the most complex conundrums where scrap cars are concerned, but the answer to the question is relatively simple:

No – under no circumstances are you permitted to drive a SORN car to a scrapyard.

There are no allowances and no exceptions to this rule. While it’s possible to drive a car without an MOT to a pre-booked test legally, a car that is SORN is declared permanently out of use.  As such, there’s no valid tax or insurance on the car, so you cannot drive it anywhere.

Nevertheless, you’d be surprised to learn just how many motorists overlook or ignore this rule entirely. They drive their SORN vehicles to scrapyards recycling centres, often not realising that they could be fined up to £2,500 for doing so.

And that’s coupled with the obvious risks associated with driving an end-of-life vehicle on public roads, which is something you really shouldn’t be doing.
