Here at Take My Scrap Car, one of the questions we get asked more than any other is that of why exactly we do what we do. People are always curious as to why we’re in the business we’re in, what exactly it is we do and why we do it. And of course, we always tell that recycling’s our thing and matters in a big way to the UK.
However, chances are it might hit home more effectively for some if we were to tell you what exactly would happen if we and the rest of the UK’s car recycling businesses shut up shop and quit for good. Car recycling may be something that goes on behind the scenes for most, but is at the same time a process that benefits all of us – even those that haven’t yet recycled a car in their lives!
So here’s a quick rundown of just some of the effects an end to car recycling would have on the UK:
Steel Becomes More Expensive
Right off the bat, to produce recycled steel costs so much less than the production of first-run steel it’s allowed for things to become cheaper than ever before. From cars to appliances to steel buildings and more, steel recycling makes life cheaper for everyone. As such, abandon car recycling and life in the UK gets more expensive for everyone.
Steel is Less Efficient
And the same also applies to efficiency too as modern recycled steel is considerably stronger, lighter and more dependable than standard first-run steel. We’re all striving for a more efficient Britain on the whole, so it makes sense not to abandon the trade that allows this to happen.
Thousands of Jobs Are Lost
The steel recycling industry creates tens of thousands of jobs at dozens of levels up and down the UK. And as the industry grows so too do the jobs created by it, which contribute to the economy and allow so many Brits to earn a living. Get rid of car recycling therefore and you put thousands of jobs on the line.
Air Pollution Levels Rise
Without car recycling, far too many old and worn out cars would be on the roads pumping out all manner of toxins. And if that wasn’t enough, we’d also have to produce more first-run steel which results in about 30% more CO2 being released than when steel is recycled. So if car recycling didn’t happen up and down the UK, the land’s air pollution levels would skyrocket.
Scrap Car Heaps Take Over the Land
And finally, the fact that it takes well over 100 years for the steel in a car to begin decomposing should tell you all you need to know about why we don’t just throw old cars on scrap heaps. Hundreds of cars are retired every day and they have to go somewhere – it’s not as if the UK is blessed with an abundance of available space as it is!
