Despite having been scrapped as an initial concept some time ago, it’s looking like motorists in Cardiff could soon face a congestion charge after all. The undeniably controversial new scheme seems more likely than ever to be implemented, as officials consider all options to tackle the city’s accelerating air pollution crisis.
For the time being however, there are no indications as to which areas of the city would be covered by the congestion charge, or how much motorists could expect to be charged to enter the city.
Justifying the proposal as an entirely necessary step forwards, Cardiff Council representatives stated that air pollution now poses a greater threat to the public than obesity or alcohol.
It was back in 2012 that the initial proposal for a congestion charge was floated, though was summarily rolled out of the equation. Much to the relief of thousands of motorists across the region. Now however, the Council has been ordered by the Welsh Government to publish a final plan to clean up the city’s air no later than September.
In order to maximise the effectiveness and minimise the potentially negative effects of the scheme, the council is said to be seeking the input of local motorists and residents to assist with the strategy. Along with a new all-round travel pass system like London’s Oyster card, Cardiff Council is considering the introduction of a comprehensive 20mph speed limit across the entire city.
“Across the world progressive cities are recognising that they need to take action to shift away from heavy reliance on cars towards greener, more sustainable transport solutions which are good for the environment, economy and our health,” commented Sophie Howe, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales.
Others have begun urging the public in general to leave the car at home on a more regular basis, opting for public transport or cycling to work where possible. Nevertheless, the prospect of being charged what could be a substantial amount simply to get from A to B on a daily basis hasn’t gone down well with many motorists.
