Chances are that over recent years you will have noticed all manner of different brands and businesses looking to pay any given price for any given scrap car. This is precisely the area of business we ourselves are in – we promise to pay the very best price for any scrap car handed over to us, regardless of its age or condition.

However, there’s been a rather important change in the law fairly recently that’s once and for all changed the way car scrapping and recycling businesses are and are not allowed to take ownership of cars. The long and short of it is that while paying a fair price for a scrap car really is the only logical and ethical way of going about things, the days of paying out cash in hand are over.   cash-in-hand-no-thanks–we-prefer-to-stay-legal

If nothing else however, it’s given the public a pretty sure-fire way of finding out which of the dealers on the market are all they’re cracked up to be and which to stay away from.

The Paper Trail

As is the case with pretty much every kind of product and service in the world today, it is a matter of law in that there must be some kind of paperwork to show the transference of the product from one person to the other. Some assume it doesn’t apply because it’s a bit like selling a second-hand anything, but as you’re technically selling the car to a business, the business needs to provide paperwork. And it’s not only for tax purposes either, as the rules and regulations surrounding the subject of car recycling are pretty extensive and complex to say the least. Suffice to say that if there’s no paperwork, they aren’t abiding by the law.

Now, it might seem like a harsh presumption to make, but you have to assume that if they’re not playing by the rules in this area…well, why would they bother in any other? If you buy scrap cars in a manner that’s against the law, everything you then do with them is also against the law. Admittedly, you yourself aren’t necessarily doing anything wrong, but in dealing with these dodgy dealers you’re helping to perpetuate an already widespread problem.

If they’re offering cash in hand with no paperwork, they tick all of the above boxes for all the wrong reasons.

By the Book or Not at All

Here at Take My Scrap Car, we’re committed to playing by the rules as set out by both the UK government and the EU. The simple fact of the matter is that car recycling is a very tough, very complex job as a whole but is nonetheless a job that should only ever be done the right way.
