The importance of responsible car scrapping and recycling has once again been illustrated by the tale of an unfortunate couple from Reading. As initially reported by the BBC, Anthony Gorman and Elizabeth Imber suddenly found themselves unable to legally drive their Volkswagen Polo, as it apparently no longer existed.
Despite the fact that the car was right there on their drive, they were told that it had been scrapped, recycled and was simply no more. This meant they couldn’t legally tax or ensure their vehicle, which ultimately meant they couldn’t drive it, either.
Upon contacting the DVLA, they were told that an official certificate of destruction had been received from a car scrapping company in Yorkshire. A company the couple had never heard of, let alone done business with. Incredibly, the scrappage firm itself confirmed that the car in question had indeed being dismantled and disposed of.
In fact, they claimed there were still bits and pieces of the mysterious scrap vehicle on their premises.
After providing evidence that the car did indeed still exist to the DVLA, its owners were eventually allowed to tax it and get it back on the roads. Nevertheless, the whole saga illustrated the importance of ensuring every vehicle taken off UK roads is responsibly scrapped and recycled.
No information was released as to the nature or origins of the car that was actuallyscrapped, leaving more questions than answers.
