Anyone looking to scrap a vehicle will understandably want to get the best price for it. There’s value in even the most dilapidated of cars, so it’s good to know you’re getting fair payment.
But when it comes to the various factors that can influence the value of a scrap car, how much does make and model matter? Does it make any difference if the car you are scrapping was once worth a fortune, or is it inconsequential when passing off cars for scrap?
The short answer…sometimes yes, sometimes no.
A Case of Components and Materials
Most of what’s collected when a scrap car is picked up is recycled and put back into the system. But there may be instances where valuable components in high-demand can be sold on.
For obvious reasons, a Lamborghini loaded with cutting-edge technology and a king’s ransom in carbon fibre is going to fetch a higher price than a 1993 Ford Fiesta with no wheels. As far as car makes and models from the extreme ends of the spectrum go, the answer is yes – those with more valuable components and materials will fetch higher prices.
In terms of more generic cars ready to be scrapped, the difference can be much subtler. Oftentimes, there may be no difference at all.
What’s completely irrelevant is how much a car cost when it was first purchased. Or for that matter, how luxurious or desirable it was when it rolled off the production line.
Instead, what matters when scrapping a car is its composition of recyclable materials, combined weight of these materials and anything else of value in the mix.
Selling Before Scrapping
At Take My Scrap Car, we always recommend removing and selling as many valuable components as you can from your car, before sending it away for scrapping.
There will always be instances where a car’s alloy wheels, for example, could be worth significantly more than the entire car’s scrap value. Or perhaps, a premium stereo system with super-expensive speakers, or other A/V technology.
Scrapping and recycling your car is all about recycling all viable materials and making sure everything else is responsibly disposed of. Hence, there’s no need to keep anything in (or on) your car that could be removed and sold on.
If looking to get the best possible price for your scrap car, it’s definitely something you need to do.
