Anyone looking to scrap an end-of-life vehicle will understandably want to get the best possible price for it. Quotations for scrap vehicles are based on scrap material values at the time, which fluctuate in accordance with a variety of factors.
But to what extent (if any) does the make and model of a vehicle affect its scrap value? Would you expect to get a much bigger payment for scrapping a Porsche than a Fiat Panda?
As usual, the answer is both yes and no – it depends entirely on the vehicle in question and the circumstances.
Simple Scrap Values
In the event of a vehicle that is simply going to be stripped, separated and processed into new raw materials, the answer is no – make and model does not have much of a bearing on scrap values.
This is due to the fact that scrap material values are fixed, irrespective of where they come from. If a certain weight of scrap metal comes from a Ferrari, it’s basically only worth the same as if it came from a Ford Fiesta. Scrap values are scrap values – they don’t vary in accordance with the origins of the materials.
Hence, don’t be too disappointed if you’re looking to scrap a once-luxurious car that’s in a pretty sorry state of repair – it’s not going to earn you a fortune!
When Make and Model Matters
That said, there are plenty of instances where the make and model of a vehicle could massively influence its scrap value. It depends entirely on the type of car you’re talking about and the condition it is in at the time.
For example, you could be looking to scrap an accident-annihilated Ferrari that isn’t even remotely salvageable. Nevertheless, the resale value of its alloy wheels could be exponentially greater than the total combined scrap value of the car’s materials.
It’s often the case that even a single aftermarket accessory or add-on could be more valuable than the rest of the car’s carcass. In which case, you’d be as well making every attempt to sell anything of value your car has, before sending it off for scrapping.
