Doing away with the traditional tax disc was a move welcomed by most drivers. It wasn’t the most particularly intrusive feature on the average car, but was still one more thing to worry about displaying prominently.
These days, car tax – more formally known as excise duty (VED) – is an all-digital affair. You no longer have to display any information regarding the tax status of your vehicle, as it’s all held in a database in correlation with your number plate.
All well and good, but what if you completely forget when your road tax is due? With no paper copy of your tax payment right there in front of you, what happens if the whole thing slips your mind and you’ve no idea whether your car is taxed or not?
Faced with this scenario, it’s important to take decisive action as quickly as possible. Unless you fail to tax your car in an appropriately timely manner, you could be landed with a £1,000 fine.
Luckily, there are two quick and easy ways to check whether or not your car is taxed. Both of which can also be useful if looking to purchase a car, and unsure whether it needs taxing.
The Government’s UK Car Tax Check Page
The quickest and easiest option is to simply head over to the official UK government’s car tax check page, and enter your vehicle’s registration number. You will then be provided with a summary of semi-interesting information about the car in question’s tax status.
It’s also possible to find out whether a car has a valid MOT on the same website, which can again be useful if looking to buy a car and unsure of its current status.
The DVLA Vehicle Checker
Over on the DVLA’s website, you can access even more detailed information about your car. Again, all you need to do is enter the same basic information, in order to be provided with a full rundown of the car’s tax status, MOT date and expiration, SORN status, year of manufacture, emissions, fuel type, weight and so on.
If in doubt, remember you can always call the DVLA directly to request the information you need. It’s far quicker and more convenient to do it yourself online, but calling is always an option, if you have any questions or concerns.
