Life for much of the country hit a screeching halt in 2020, resulting in all manner of plans being put on ice. One major example of which was driver tuition and intensive driving courses, as those who had their sights set on their licences decided to wait things out.

We’re now well in 2021 and things are starting to improve, but the likelihood of things returning to ‘normal’ anytime soon are minimal.

In which case, is now a good time to be thinking about taking driving lessons?

The Pros of Learning to Drive in Lockdown

Examining the advantages first, there are a few reasons why booking a course of driving lessons during lockdown is not necessarily a bad idea:

  1. Demand is comparatively low, meaning it is perfectly possible to negotiate preferential rates with quality driving schools.
  2. Driving instructors in general are not quite as busy as they normally are, enabling learners to select convenient times and dates for their lessons to suit their schedules.
  3. At present, UK roads at all times of day and night are quieter than they have been in years. This therefore makes for more amicable driving conditions for learners who may be nervous about driving in busy conditions.
  4. Most good driving schools are taking every possible precaution to provide safe and hygienic lessons, providing those who do take part with peace of mind.

The Cons of Learning to Drive in Lockdown

As for the negatives, there are a few downsides to be considered by learner drivers looking to organise tuition under the current circumstances:

  1. The obvious disadvantage of taking driving lessons now is the potential risks associated with prolonged close contact with other people.  Precautions can be taken, but risks cannot be eliminated entirely.
  2. Quiet roads may be somewhat beneficial for nervous drivers, but at the same time do not necessarily provide an accurate indication of what it is really like to drive in normal traffic conditions.
  3. There may also be additional complications to factor in with regard to taking driving theory tests, which again in many instances have been disrupted due to the lingering COVID-19 crisis.

Voice Your Questions and Concerns

Whether the pros outweigh the cons is purely a matter of personal opinion, but in all instances it makes sense to clarify any questions or concerns you may have with your chosen driving school.

Ask them what they do to keep learner drivers safe, check recent reviews from genuine customers and decide whether to go ahead or hold out a little longer.
