It’s not uncommon for a car that’s reached the end of its service life to linger indefinitely on the drive. Or perhaps, gather dust in a garage somewhere, rather than being put back to good use via a local recycling centre.

Eventually, it begins to cramp your style, and you decide to take action. At which point, you realise you haven’t seen the keys to the car in question for several months…or years.

Not only does this mean you cannot start your car, but you can’t even open its doors. All of which creates more than a slight issue, in terms of getting it up and running.

But does this mean that scrapping is completely out of the question, if you no longer have the keys to your car? Can you still offload your scrap car and get a decent price for it, despite the fact that it is immobile and inaccessible?

Strategic Scrapping Solutions

The short answer to both questions is yes – if you deal with the right people. Car scrapping and recycling is all about making the best of a bad situation. Even if things are just about as inconvenient as they can be, it’s not usually an issue.

For one thing, whether your car starts or not is inconsequential, given the fact that it will be taken away on a recovery vehicle. Even if the engine is completely inoperable, it’s no problem – the whole thing is going to be torn apart and recycled, anyway.

In terms of entry, it may or may not be necessary to gain access to your vehicle’s interior, in order for it to be scrapped. How you go about the process is entirely up to you, but it’s worth remembering that things like damaged locks aren’t an issue where scrapping is concerned.

Some take the window-breaking approach to getting into their scrap cars to retrieve what’s inside, but this can be a hazardous option and doesn’t come highly recommended.

Still, there’s not really a great deal you can do at this stage that will impact the scrap value or appropriateness of your vehicle. As it’s simply going to be processed into new materials, the fact that it’s inoperable and in a sorry state of repair really doesn’t matter.
