Understandably, motorists planning on scrapping their cars don’t typically prioritise cleanliness. If your end-of-life vehicle is destined for destruction, what does it matter if it’s a complete mess?
For the most part, it doesn’t really matter at all. At least, as far as the exterior of the car is concerned and its general upkeep. But when it comes to the kind of detritus that accumulates in the average car, it’s a different story.
We all like a shortcut, but attempting to kill two birds with one stone could actually prove counterproductive.
How Not to Scrap a Car
The temptation to send a car off for scrapping loaded with garbage is easy to understand. For obvious reasons, nobody expects a typical scrap car to be completely pristine inside and out.
In which case, why not leave the garbage strewn around your car’s interior for someone else to deal with?
Sadly, this is a recipe for refusal. Unless the interior of your car has been emptied of all but its essential components, it will not be accepted for collection. It takes time, effort and money to prep and ready cars for destruction and recycling. A process complicated further by excess quantities of rubbish.
It is therefore the responsibility of the driver to ensure as much visible rubbish is removed as possible, prior to collection. Not that this means hiding rubbish under the seats is fine – it’s not!
Which Items Are OK to Leave in a Scrap Car?
As mentioned above, there shouldn’t be anything in your car other than its essential components. This means that everything from phone holders to air fresheners to decorative items should be removed.
Emptying the ash trays is also your job – purely as a case of courtesy!
On the plus side, there’s no need to go about an in-depth interior clean before your car is collected. A quick vacuum is a good idea if it is particularly filthy, simply for hygiene purposes. Just as long as the vast majority of everyday refuse has been removed, that’s usually enough.
