Given the events of 2020, it’s hardly surprising that this particular bombshell didn’t have a great deal of impact.

In any normal year, confirmation from the government that all diesel and petrol cars will be banned from 2030 would have caused chaos. As it was sneakily announced in the midst of a much bigger problem, Boris Johnson got away with the whole thing quite likely.

Plus, marketing the upcoming prohibition as part of a ‘Green Industrial Revolution’ makes it difficult to argue with. At least, from an environmental perspective – not necessarily from an economic vantage point.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest concern among those who’ll be affected by the ban is affordability. As things stand right now, decent hybrid and all-electric cars are exponentially more expensive than their diesel or petrol counterparts.

Costs are expected to come down over the coming years, but the prospect of forking out for a new hybrid or EV isn’t particularly pleasing for most.

An Unreasonable Deadline?

On a slightly more positive note, the deadline of just 10 years from today is not quite as harsh or restrictive as it sounds on the surface. Contrary to popular belief, the ban on combustion engine vehicles by 2030 does not mean that it will suddenly be illegal to drive your car on the roads.

Instead, it simply means that nobody will be permitted to sell new petrol and diesel vehicles in the UK.

Given that the average lifespan of a new petrol or diesel vehicle these days is a good 15 to 20 years at least, this will mean we’ll still be seeing millions of them doing their thing on public roads until 2050. In addition, the government has said nothing about the prohibition of selling and buying used petrol and diesel vehicles after 2030.

In which case, they’ll probably be both around and available indefinitely. If your budget simply will not stretch to a new hybrid or EV within the next 20 to 30 years, there should be no shortage of used combustion engine vehicles available that you can still legally drive on public roads.
