Having seen success the first time around, Renault has announced a new round of scrappage offers for motorists looking to upgrade. From now until January 7th, motorists with cars registered before December 31st 2011 will be able to claim up to £5,000 off the price of a new car. The proviso of course being that they hand over their old car for scrappage.
The maximum saving of £5,000 is applicable to the all-electric Renault Zoe, which is also eligible for the current plug-in car grant available from the UK government. This means that total savings available on the Renault Zoe come to a whopping £9,500, taking the total price of the car down to just £13,420.
Having recently been updated, the Zoe remains one of the strongest-selling electric vehicles in Europe, with a range of around 185 miles with a single charge. For the time being at least, those who upgrade to the Zoe through the company’s scrappage scheme will also qualify for a free wallbox home charging point.
According to the carmaker, every vehicle traded in by motorists claiming the discounts will be removed from public roads and responsibly recycled.
The various discounts Renault is offering those looking to upgrade are as follows:
- Zoe: £5,000
- Kadjar: £3,000
- Clio: £2,000
- Captur: £2,000
- Twingo: £1,500
- Koleos: £1,000
- Megane: £1,000
- Scenic: £1,000
The move represents the latest in a long line of initiatives to gradually drive older and more polluting cars off UK roads, once and for of all. Motorists are being offered generous sums of money to hand over their old vehicles, which can be used against the price of various hybrids and electrics.
However, critics have argued that the incentives are insufficient to appeal to the average UK motorists. Particularly those who were urged by the government just a few years ago to invest in a diesel car for the sake of the environment. The same cars that may soon be liable for heavy taxation, levies or perhaps complete prohibition for use on public roads.
Still, initiatives like these are geared towards the greater good. With air pollution levels at dangerous highs across much of the UK, more must be done to protect public health by any means necessary. What’s more, as the costs of electric vehicles continue to decline over the coming years, the market may have more appeal to those who have so far written it off as inaccessible.
