In an effort to tackle air pollution and drive dangerous vehicles off public roads, the Mayor of London has announced an ambitious new scrappage scheme. The popularity of the scheme remains to be seen, but local authorities across the UK are already being urged to consider similar initiatives.
Sadiq Khan announced the £25 million scheme at the end of February, on top of the £23 million already pledged in the form of a second initiative specifically targeting van drivers. In both instances, it’s a case of encouraging drivers in ownership of older and less eco-friendly vehicles to do the right thing.
As is typically the case, a variety of incentives will be offered to those willing to scrap their current vehicles and upgrade. Owners of diesel vehicles in particular are being encouraged to come forwards, despite the government’s immense support of diesel as a ‘safer’ fuel choice just a few short years ago.
In total, the government is to be requested for approximately £1.5 billion in funding to roll out similar initiatives in major towns and cities across the UK. The mayors of Sheffield and Manchester have already expressed interest in following London’s example. Should the initiative go ahead at a national level, it’s expected that this sum could result in close to 500,000 polluting vehicles being taken off UK roads. All while providing generous incentives for drivers willing to upgrade.
Scrapping initiatives in the UK have traditionally been met with a mixed response, but it’s nonetheless hoped that the latest scheme will gain more traction than its predecessors.
