Vehicle recycling has become huge business in the UK over recent years, prompting the arrival of all manner of new scrap yards and service providers. No matter where in Britain you live, it takes no more than a quick Google search to come up with all manner of local and national scrap car dealers offering recycling services. And as it’s all in the name of the same good cause, you’d be forgiven for thinking that they all work in the same way and do the same thing.
But you’d be wrong.
Of course, there are much riskier things in life than siding with a less-than ideal car recycling specialist, but at the same time there’s no sense in choosing a bum brand if there’s a world of better options on your doorstop.
So if you’re the kind that would like to ensure your car recycling endeavour doesn’t turn into a fiasco, watch out for the following danger signs:
No Mention of Paperwork
First up, there’s an administrative element to scrapping a car that’s about as fun as surgery but essential as it gets. Fail to fill in and submit the right paperwork and doing your ‘bit’ for the environment will be rewarded with a big-fat penalty charge in the post. Some recycling companies will help you with the paperwork and the very best examples will do it all on your behalf. By contrast, those that don’t even mention it and clearly have no intention of helping you out might not have your best interests at heart.
You’re Expected to Pay
Something else to get well and truly out of the habit is paying the service itself to take your scrap car. This has of course been the way of things for a few decades now and never failed to annoy the poor driver trying to get rid of their car. Now though, it’s largely unheard of to send a car for recycling and not receive a fair price for it.
Vague Quotes with No Guarantees
And on the subject of price, the provider should be more than willing to back their price offered with a guarantee it won’t be beaten. And if not, chances are you’ll get a better price elsewhere.
You’re Expected to Deliver
Trying to get a knackered car to the scrap yard in the first place can range from difficult to impossible to downright illegal…it might not be insured or road-worthy, for example. As such, it’s not in your best interests to side with a recycling service that expects you to take responsibility for delivering the car to the yard. Instead, they should collect it from you on your own time and only when you deem appropriate.
No Evidence of Recycling
Last but not least, check just for a moment as to whether the car scrapping service you’re looking into really does recycle cars, or whether they’re more likely to just leave the thing to rust and decay. You’re trying to do your bit by recycling, so it’s a good idea to make sure they’re doing the same!
