When a car is clearly reaching the end of its life, it’s natural to quickly start thinking about pawning it off on someone else. Not that all UK motorists have some kind of inherently sinister urge to do wrong by others, but when and where anything you have appears to have finished serving its purpose, you tend to want to get rid of it and ideally get paid for it too.

Would you allow another family to drive around in a death trap? Of course not, but sell an old car to someone that knows how to fix and restore them and you can perhaps sleep more soundly at night. Sadly though this doesn’t tend to be the easiest trick to pull off – the primary reason being that used car standards across the UK have never been higher. Just take a look at any UK road this very morning and chances are you’ll now notice a distinct change from 20 or so years ago. Gone are the old bangers, rust-buckets and generally dangerous £250 antiques the UK public was once in love with, replaced instead by ever-shinier and newer cars.     scrapping-vs-selling–try-one-then-the-other

As for why? Well, it all comes down to a combination of growing refinement in terms of what we’re willing to expect and the ease of obtaining finance. But regardless of the cause, it means that it has never been more difficult to sell on a clapped out old car and chances are it’ll only become more tricky as time moves forward.

Spares or Repair

If you ask us, there’s really no harm in first trying to get rid of your old car for spares or repair purposes. These days, you can list an old car on an online auction site for next to nothing and if it doesn’t sell for the price you want, no harm done. In the case of certain rare, once-valuable or in any way sought-after cars, there’s every chance that the parts it holds alone could be worth a fair bit. This doesn’t tend to be the case with about 95% of all cars sold for such purposes, but there’s really no harm in giving it a go.

Going the Green Route

If, by contrast, it’s painfully apparent that your car now represents more of a curse than a blessing to the world it graces, there’s really no better way to go than recycling. Admittedly, it’s no fun to think of your car being shredded and processed into new steel, but at the same time it’s a much better thought than allowing it to rot and decay for the rest of eternity.

Or worse still, allowing some unfortunate and unassuming family to drive their kids around in it.

With the best scrapping services, you’d be surprised just how much value there may be in even the most clapped out and run down cars you’ve ever laid eyes on. And as you’ll be doing your all-important ‘bit’ for Mother Earth at the same time, you’ll be able to give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back for doing the right thing.
