The whole point of selling a used car is of course to make sure you get the best possible price and certainly take home more than you would if you were to scrap it. The idea of taking your once-trusty ride to a scrapyard in order for it to be shredded, crushed and summarily processed into new steel isn’t one that tends to inspire, so it seems like a much better idea to sell it on and keep it in the game, as it were.

On paper this is the great way to go, but in reality things don’t always pan out as planned. In fact, there are so many instances in which selling a car can actually end up leaving the owner out of pocket, meaning they’d have been wiser to go with the scrapping option in the first place.   Old Lettering, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota

Fees, Charges and Time

For example, you may be able to list your used car for free using an online auction website or classified listing, but chances are you’ll lose a percentage of the selling price in fees and charges. Not bad if you’re selling a car that’s really worth something, but if the car isn’t going to fetch you more than a few quid, you have to question whether or not it’s really worth bothering. What’s more, you also have to factor the time you’ll need to set aside for viewings, test drives and sorting out the final sale itself – is there any point in taking this kind of time off work when you’ll be selling the car for next to nothing anyway?

It’s worth asking yourself before going ahead.

Shifting Bangers

Then of course comes the old standard of trying to unload your old banger on some other buyer having decided that you yourself aren’t willing to drive it around anymore. You may have gone off it, you may have noted a few problems that seem to be growing or you may be fully aware that it is likely to fall to bits at the first violent sneeze. Needless to say, selling a car you know is no good is neither a morally acceptable thing to do, nor a savvy financial move.

For one thing, there’s a chance you’ll be asked for a refund – and given the fact that you didn’t disclose all you knew about the car, you’ll have to pay up. Then of course there’s the chance that the car might cause a serious accident, which could again see you being held at least partially responsible and facing all manner of nasty consequences.

Again, is it really worth it for the sake of the fifty quid or so you got for the old girl?
