All motorists will eventually find themselves in a position where they need to organise car repairs. At which point, it becomes painfully apparent just how expensive it can be to keep a car up and running.
Depending on the age and condition of the car, this may also be the point at which you begin to question – is it worth really keeping it on the roads at all?
Making the decision to scrap a car is never easy. This counts double when it is a car that’s been serving you proudly for years or even decades, and has to some extent become part of the family.
Still, there’s no sense pouring good money down the drain on something that’s no longer proving quite as loyal as it used to be.
If you’re tossing up between fixing and scrapping your car for any reason, focusing on the following could make it an easier decision:
1. The Repair Costs
First and foremost, you need to be realistic when it comes to the costs of organising the required repairs. Given the age and condition of your vehicle, is it really worth spending this kind of money on new parts and components? It’s one thing to lavish a relatively new car with an £800 repair, but a car that’s clearly on its last legs might not warrant this kind of patch-up.
2. Future Repair Costs
In addition, it’s important to think carefully about whether this is an isolated incident, or if further repairs are going to be needed going forwards. If you find yourself in a position where you’re continuously or regularly forking out for repairs – even relatively minor repairs – you could be needlessly overspending. Total up the repairs you’re paying for over a given period of time and there’s a good chance you’d be able to afford a more reliable car for less.
3. Your Car’s Value
Speaking of which, is there genuinely enough value left in your car to justify costly repairs? If the market value of your rundown car is no more than around £500, what’s the point spending £500+ on keeping it running? You’d be far better taking this money, combining it with a little more money and picking up something that’s not going to let you down quite as often.
4. Your Safety and Comfort
Most importantly of all, it’s important to prioritise your safety and comfort. If your car is no longer pleasant to drive and seems to be falling apart from the inside out, it could be posing a direct risk to your health and safety. For the sake of you, your passengers and all other road users, scrapping a car that’s no longer safe to drive isn’t something you should be putting off.
