If there’s one thing you need to know about car scrapping and recycling, it’s this:

You need to be provided with a Certificate of Destruction and hold onto it for your records.

At Take My Scrap Car, part of the service we provide is assisting our customers with the DVLA admin. When your car is formally declared as scrapped, a Certificate of Destruction is sent digitally by the DVLA as confirmation.

We receive this certificate after your vehicle is processed at an Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATF), which more or less confirms it’s both off the road and has been responsibly disposed of.

In the UK, it’s a legal requirement to ensure that end-of-life vehicles are disposed of in accordance with various rules and regulations. The Certificate of Destruction you receive confirms that you’ve followed the rules, and therefore won’t be liable for any fines or penalties.

By contrast, fail to receive a Certificate of Destruction when disposing of an end-of-life vehicle and it could cause you all sorts of problems.

What Happens if I Don’t Get a Certificate of Destruction?

If you don’t get a Certificate of Destruction when you are handing over your vehicle, it confirms you’re working with a dodgy dealer. It also means that for the foreseeable future, your car still exists (in an administrative capacity at least) and you are still the rightful owner of it.

Subsequently, should your vehicle be sold, given away or used against your will after it was supposed to be destroyed, you could be held liable for the consequences. Until it has been disposed of and you have received a Certificate of Destruction, it’s still your car and your responsibility.

Precisely why it’s a formal requirement for all reputable car scrapping and recycling specialists to provide one. Unless it’s a standard part of the deal (and 100% free of charge), don’t even think about handing over your scrap car.
