For obvious reasons, now really isn’t the time to be taking chances where health and safety are concerned. Even with the worst of the COVID-19 crisis behind us, it’s likely to be some time before Brits in general begin taking the subject of hygiene for granted.

In fact, most experts believe the whole saga will permanently change the way we live our lives and how we approach any number of everyday duties.

Unsurprisingly, all of this has resulted in more motorists than ever before taking an interest in the cleanliness of their cars. The reason being that even when a car looks more or less pristine at a glance, it can actually be harbouring more dirt and grime than you could possibly imagine.

Even if COVID-19 hadn’t wrecked 2020 in its entirety, we’d still be well on our way to cold and flu season. In which case, it would still be important to step things up hygiene-wise to keep yourself and your family safe.

In-Car Germ, Bacteria and Virus Hotspots

Just as is the case in the home, there are certain areas in the average vehicle that are far more likely to harbour germs, bacteria and viruses than others. These aren’t the only places that warrant thorough cleaning, but are nonetheless the hotspots you should think about giving a hygienic clean on a more regular basis.

Just a few examples of which include the following – your in-car hygiene checklist for a safe and healthy season ahead:

  1. Keys, key rings, wallets and mobile phones
  2. Exterior and interior door handles
  3. The steering wheel and its buttons/levers
  4. Dashboard and air vents
  5. Gear stick and handbrake
  6. Stereo and all dashboard buttons
  7. Glove box handle
  8. Seat adjustment leavers and buttons
  9. Heating controls and interior lights
  10. Seatbelts
  11. Cup holders
  12. Window handles and buttons
  13. Fuel cap
  14. Rear view mirrors
  15. Touchscreens and control panels

Roughly translated, it’s a case of paying particularly close attention to anything in your car you touch on a regular basis. These are the kinds of knobs, levers, buttons and panels that may look clean, but could nonetheless be a breeding ground for bacteria.

The good news being that keeping tabs on all of the above is as simple as arming yourself with a pack of anti-bacterial wipes and ensuring they are within easy reach. Even if not before and after each and every journey, it’s a good idea to give your interiors a good hygienic wipe every couple of days or so. More often if you’re transporting passengers (i.e. family members) around with you – more people = more nastiness to deal with.
