Given the fact that we’re so directly involved in the UK’s broad-scale recycling efforts, it’s not only scrap cars and scrap metal that we’re interested in. Instead, the team at Take My Scrap Car always has its collective ear to the ground for when a relevant and interesting story pops up.
Suffice to say, one story we found a particularly interesting was that of how the Glastonbury Festival once again saw a pretty huge contingency of revelers generating what can only be described as a colossal amount of waste. Each and every year, festival organisers think that things have peaked and won’t be quite as chaotic next time around. And each and every year, they find themselves stunned once again.
This time around, the team of 800 volunteers brought in to help deal with the carnage estimated somewhere in the region of 1,650 tons of waste being left behind, along with no less than 5,000 abandoned tents. Once again, bad whether prompted thousands of attendees to simply leave their damaged or dirty gear behind, instead of doing the responsible thing and taking it with them.
Back in 2015, the cleanup crew came across no less than 11 tons of camping gear and clothing alone that had been abandoned after the festival. Given the fact that the weather was even worse this year, it’s entirely likely that the cleanup effort will be even more intensive.
On the whole, waste from the festival is expected to generate in the region of 66 tons of scrap metal, 41 tons of cardboard and 54 tons of plastic bottles and cans. Those attending the festival were once again asked kindly to take anything they intended to leave behind to a specific point, in order to make the subsequent cleanup and recycling efforts easier. As the pictures have since confirmed, this apparently didn’t happen.
