It isn’t particularly rare to hear of scrap metal trucks coming a cropper in various regions worldwide. For some reason, they seem to be involved in a disproportionate number of accidents and incidents on the roads. Which could come down to the fact that not all truck drivers follow the same rules, when it comes to safe and sensible stockpiling!
Just this week saw another example of such a freak accident, but one with a surprisingly happy ending. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a truck carrying huge pieces of scrap metal overturned on an overpass, sending the most enormous piece of cargo hurtling straight onto the roof of a passing car. The truck flipped, the piece of scrap metal flew over the overpass and hit the car below with astonishing precision.
But what makes the whole thing even more remarkable is that the driver of the car walked away with only the most superficial injuries. The fact that he wasn’t obliterated has been hailed as a miracle – the fact that his name is Jesus has also not escaped the attention of the local Florida media!
As you can see from the image, the fact that 36-year-old Jesus Armando Escobar of Orlando survived in any way, shape or form really is quite spectacular. Authorities said that if the object has landed even a few centimetres further towards him, there’s no way he’d have been walking away from the accident.
“He’s a father to three small children and he’s our miracle,” Escobar’s wife, Aricelli, in an interview with ABC News.
Both she and the authorities said that Jesus is “blessed to be alive”.
As for the truck driver, 33-year-old Antonio Santiago Wharton of Kisimmee also suffered a few minor injuries, though got away pretty lightly given the nature of the accident.
He also got off pretty lightly in a legal sense too – he was ticketed for careless driving, but that’s about it.
So…what’s the moral of the story?
There isn’t one really – aside from the importance of driving carefully for the sake of yourself and everyone else!
