It seems that the car scrapping craze that’s sweeping the UK has finally landed on the doorstep of Mr. Boris Johnson himself. Having firmly believed for some time that diesel cars – even those of a fairly young age – are hazardous to the environment, BoJo has come up with an idea that he hopes might take flight up and down the country.
The way he sees it, the answer to the UK’s growing problem with air pollution lies in paying diesel car drivers a cool £2,000 to scrap their cars and buy petrol. Now, this has unsurprisingly rattled a few cages in Westminster and up and down Britain in general, but it appears he’s genuinely serious about ridding UK roads of diesel cars.
‘This has been a massive failure of public policy,’ he said last week.
‘Millions were told they were doing the right thing, the clean thing, the environmentally friendly thing, by buying diesel. They feel very hacked off now they’re told they are more polluting.’
And it’s not like he’s just pulling ideas out of thin air either, as scientists recently reported that diesel cars may be directly to blame for no less than 7,000 deaths in the UK alone every year. He’s already implemented a ban on taxis in London over 15 years old, meaning that over 3,000 cabs are to be scrapped right off the bat. And by 2018, he wants half of all taxis in London to either be electric or hybrid vehicles.
Which of course begs the obvious question – how realistic is it to ask the drivers of the UK to part with their perfectly functional diesel vehicles for a £2,000 payout? Of course there will be all manner of terms and conditions attached, but we couldn’t help but wonder what customers of Take My Scrap Car think of the idea – does it sound like a scheme that’s up your street?
The Ideal End of Life for Scrap Cars
We can certainly see where BoJo is coming from as our very purpose is to take old cars, strip them, recycle them and get them put back to use in the best way possible. However, where we differ is the way in which we specialise in old scrap cars that are by rights really of little use to anyone anymore. You can’t sell them and you really don’t want to keep on driving them, so we take them off your hands and do the right thing.
To take all the old, inefficient and environmentally hazardous cars off the UK roads would work wonders for the environment. Britain is working hard to reach its CO2 reduction targets over the coming years, but we won’t get there unless everyone gets involved and does their ‘bit’ to help.
So, if you’ve got an old car that’s either cramping your style or becoming the thorn in your side, give us a call. We’ll come to you, take it away, sort the paperwork and even pay you for doing the right thing!
It might not be £2,000 but it’ll certainly be the best offer you’ll get – guaranteed!
