In a working example, let’s say two motorists were looking to scrap vehicles that no longer had any practical value. One of which was a clapped-out Land Rover from 30 years ago, the other being a pretty sweet-looking Porsche. Neither will ever find its way back onto public roads, so scrapping and recycling is the only realistic option.

In this case, you’d be forgiven for thinking the Porsche would obviously be worth more. And it might be, but it’s not quite as simple as it appears. 

When a car is scrapped, its value is calculated in accordance with its recyclable material content. The weight of the recyclable materials is established, UK scrap metal prices are considered accordingly and the total scrap value of the vehicle is ascertained. So in this sense, it’s more about the weight of the vehicle and its composition of recyclable materials than its prior value.

This therefore means that even the most luxurious supercar could technically be worth no more than a clapped-out SUV from the mid-80s. Various factors contribute to the value of a scrap car, though its initial purchase price isn’t typically one of them.

Of course, if the vehicle still has some kind of value left in it, you could always go ahead and sell it. In fact, there are certain parts and components in more expensive cars that could net you more than the entire vehicle’s scrap value. If you’re looking at a seriously prestigious ride of some kind, you might want to think about extracting its most valuable parts and accessories, prior to sending it off for recycling.

It might be a time-consuming and tricky process, but could nonetheless result in a decent pay-off.
