“We’ve had breakdowns, been stopped by four police cars for bribes, been sick a couple of times, got lost in a desert, got stuck in sand, and someone actually robbed all our camping equipment,” said Cristian Spiteri.
On paper, it doesn’t sound like the most enjoyable outing with friends. But when these three chaps set out on a gruelling 17,000km road trip in a scrap car that would otherwise be heading for the crusher, they weren’t expecting an easy ride. In fact, it was challenges like these that made the whole thing such a thrill ride from start to finish.
“All of this made the experience even better and more thrilling,” Cristian continued.
What you see in the picture here is Cristian with two of his friends – Daniel and Keith – who decided to take part in the infamous MongolRally this year. This incredible event sees rugged and often highly modified cars embarking on an 11,000-mile journey from the UK to Russia, crossing 21 countries along the way.
In their case, the decision was made to do the whole thing in a scrap car – an old Peugeot 205 they named Lizzie.
“It definitely wasn’t easy, but it was all worth it,” Cristian said. “This wasn’t a holiday, but a challenging experience. I would suggest it to anyone who loves adventure though.”
From start to finish, it took the trio 45 days to complete the course, dealing with all manner of weird and wonderful occurrences along the way. The car itself was picked up for next to nothing and given a modest makeover for safety purposes, but was at its core a scrap car ready for the recycling plant.
Far from a simple joyride, the team had set out to raise a decent sum of money for a charitable organisation back home in Malta. Which they did, pulling together around £2,000 for a couple of fundraising initiatives they wanted to help.
“We collected a total of £1,050 for CoolEarth and another €1,300 for Puttinu Cares,” Cristian told Lovin Malta.
“It was an awesome experience,” the young Maltese man said of the tough experience that the team described as “11,000 miles of pure adventure, challenges, and fun.”
Doing the Right Thing
Here at Take My Scrap Car, we’re all about doing the right thing. Of course, we’d never suggest for a moment that everyone looking at an end-of-life vehicle should attempt to drive it to Russia. But when the time comes, it’s important to ensure your scrap car is disposed of properly.
Come to us and we’ll take your scrap car off your hands and make sure it is responsibly recycled. We’ll collect it, tow it away and take care of the disposal process – all 100% free of charge. We’ll even pay you a fair price for it, in accordance with scrap values on the day.
