Beeston Regis pops up in the Domesay Book of 1086, at which time it was recorded as having little other than open land and half a mill. Apparently the mill was built right on the borderline between two neighbouring parishes – each of which ended up in technical ownership of half of it, at least as far as the census was concerned.
