At Take My Scrap Car, we understand that some of the terminology used by the DVLA (and elsewhere in the industry) can be somewhat confusing. Particularly when it comes to damaged vehicles, motorists are often entirely oblivious to what the jargon really means.
In the simplest terms possible, a salvage car is simply a vehicle that can no longer be driven on public roads due to extensive damage. However, this does not mean that a salvage car is beyond repair and therefore must be scrapped and recycled.
Depending on the nature and extent of the damage, it may be perfectly possible to repair a salvage car and put it back into use.
The question being – when is it possible (or advisable) to attempt to repair a salvage vehicle, rather than scrapping and recycling it?
The Various Damage Categories
When a car is involved in an accident or collision of any kind, the extent of the damage will fall within one of the following four categories:
- Category A: This is where the extent of the damage is so great that the car cannot be fixed, nor any of its major components salvageable. It therefore must be scrapped.
- Category B: This category covers cars that are damaged beyond repair, though may have some components that can be extracted and utilised elsewhere.
- Category S: This applies when it is technically possible to fix the car and return it to use, but doing so would cost more than the vehicle itself is worth.
- Category N: These vehicles can be repaired and returned to the road, at a potentially high price though a total cost lower than the value of the vehicle.
These four categories can provide a good indication as to whether or not it is worth doing anything with your salvage vehicle, other than scrapping and recycling it. Getting a quotation from a repair shop you can trust will help you figure out whether paying for the necessary repairs is advisable.
